Crystal Liu Lands The Coveted Role In Niki Caro's MULAN For Disney

I was irking to find out what exactly were the ins and outs of The Hollywood Reporter's exclusive post on Tuesday about the upcoming Mulan film from director Niki Caro. Apparently that report had been retracted from the bulletin so I didn't forward anything and especially since other trade sites didn't echo the news.
Thus, the word is officially out now and with none other than actress Crystal Liu (The Forbidden Kingdom, The Four franchise, Once Upon A Time) having nabbed the heralded role telling of a young girl who bends her gender to join the military in place of her sick father in lieu of a forthcoming invasion. The film opens in 2019 apart from Sony's own development of a live-action take on the character with a date pending.
Liu was one of a reported 1,000 candidates for the production's five-continent visit per its search for an Asian lead - a tantamount decision for cinephiles pained by whitewashed roles in minority-centric multimedia. Chris Bender, Jason…

AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Assembles The MCU's Mightiest Heroes In The First Official Trailer

As enduring as superhero movies tend to be, at the very least, Marvel has been much more cohesive and organized with its itinerary of titles previous and forthcoming. Nothing has fallen extraneous or out of alignment for the MCU and as it so stands in the wake of Spider-Man: Homecoming, Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol.2, Thor: Ragnarok and upcoming Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War now aims to bring it altogether for the first of a two-part finale culminating everything since Robert Downey Jr. and filmmaker Jon Faverau paved the way in Iron Man. As the Avengers and their allies have continued to protect the world from threats too large for any one hero to handle, a new danger has emerged from the cosmic shadows: Thanos. A despot of intergalactic infamy, his goal is to collect all six Infinity Stones, artifacts of unimaginable power, and use them to inflict his twisted will on all of reality. Everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this moment - the fate of Earth and exist…

THE HIT LIST: November 27, 2017

Believe it or not, we're coming down the wire with the Hit Lists of 2017! December 4 will be the last entry before I recommence things in January. Until then, I am also preparing content for the next several weeks in which I discuss upcoming films to look out for in 2018, so stick around for those as well.

For now though, it's business as usual for The Hit List assembling the week's stunt and demo reels and projects.

Stuntman, actor and filmmaker Diego Ramiro gives us an impressive showing this week with an spirited action comedy reel showcasing just what a versatile talent he is. He kicks off this week's playlist with more reels by Kimberly Root, Andrew Nadanyi, Valisa Tate, Adam Carson, Marina Volkova, Geoffrey Boggs, Molly Thomas, Felix Cortes, Jeffrey Mayfield, Trevor de Groot and Chad Riley.

It's time for some trailer gems and thus, the past decade or so have seen a sizeable raft of creatives among which only a handful have provenly taken the initiative in em…

Ready for another brutal and bloody round with Savage Dog actor/director Scott Adkins and Jesse Johnson? Den Of Geek just presented the exclusive first official trailer for Sony's upcoming U.S. release of Accident Man inspired by the comic book adaptation of the same name. Based on the underground British comic Toxic! by Pat Mills (creator of the “Judge Dredd” comic) and Tony Skinner, this darkly humorous and stylishly violent adaptation stars Scott Adkins (Doctor Strange, The Expendables 2) as Accident Man, a stone-cold killer who must face off against a rogue’s gallery of ruthless assassins in order to uncover the truth about his ex-girlfriend’s murder. Co-starring Ashley Greene (Twilight series), Oscar® nominee David Paymer (Best Supporting Actor, Mr. Saturday Night, 1992), and action fan favorites Ray Park (Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace), Ray Stevenson (Thor series) and Michael Jai White (The Dark Knight), ACCIDENT MAN hits its target with a lethally entertaining co…

JUNGLEE: Vidyut Jammwal Seeks Vengeance In Thailand For THE SCORPION KING Helmer's Latest

Anyone treading on airport grounds in recent hours might have spotted a certain Vidyut Jammwal awaiting a flight bound for Thailand this month. The move signals the latest progress for the upcoming action adventure, Junglee for the Commando star marking a first for The Scorpion King and I Am Wrath helmer Chuck Russell as production commences this year.
As Times Now reports per the film's plot, Jammwal will play Ashwath, a big time veterinarian obliged by his grandmother to revisit his jungle home in Kerala in lieu of the tenth anniversary of his mother's death. Upon rekindling his paltry relationship with his animal activist father along with that of his childhood elephant sister, Didi, and her cub, Apu, Ashwath finds himself thirsty for vengeance when poachers target his village, killing his father as well as Apu.
Given the obvious similarities with Tony Jaa's stellar rollout via Tom Yum Goong, clearly a narrative like this will give Jammwal and Russell plenty of wiggle…

A GHOST DOG Sequel Is Already In Development; Whitaker And Jarmusch Reportedly Involved

Looking at Jim Jarmusch's seventh narrative film effort, Ghost Dog: The Way Of The Samurai, you would be forgiven for believing that to be the end of the story. Leave it to news as of last week citing that Jarmusch is reportedly reuniting with actor Forest Whitaker to take on a sequel apparently written and ready to go from scribes, Dallas Jackson and musician and noted musician and producer RZA. "Jim Jarmusch, my good buddy, and Forest Whitaker, have both signed on with me and another writer named Dallas Jackson, to executive produce another Ghost Dog. And we already have something written. So maybe Ghost Dog will make its way back to the silver screen, or small screen." The exclusive at Birth.Movies.Death. from Monday also cites this as a possible move toward a streamed series and notes that both Jarmusch and Whitaker haven't spoken on the project. Moreover it hasn't been publicly confirmed if whether or not the Rogue One co-star will reprise his role which in …

Fukuda Announces GINTAMA Sequel For 2018

Japan had an amazing run at the box office this year with manga adaptations, especially in the summer with Fukuda Yuichi's live-action adaptation of Hideaki Sorachi's long running manga, Gintama from Warner Bros. Japan. I don't know what the buzz is on a critical scale but the film reportedly earned an impressive 3.84 billion yen which clearly paves the way for some good prospects to come.
...And come, they did, with word via Crunchyroll by way of Comic Natalie that a sequel is now being slated for the Summer of 2018, according to an announcement made by the director himself at the UDX theater in Tokyo alongside the initial film's star, Oguri Shun whose return to the role hadn't yet been confirmed; The announcement was made in parallel to the promotion of the Japanese DVD and Blu-Ray.
I'm a little surprised since Summer is only about seven or eight months away and it usually takes a film bolstering with special effects months to polish before releasing, so thi…

VALENTINE: Don't Miss The Latest Trailer For The Indonesian Superhero Flick Now Out In Theaters

For the longest time I wondered just what in the sixth circle of hell happened with the adaptation of Aswin MC Siregar's superheroine comic, Valentine. It's anyone's guess as far as I know beyond the post production process seeing as how the film started its release campaign in 2015 but, the film is finally out now and playing in local theaters, host to local TV actress Estelle Linden who underwent a year of versatile martial arts training for the lead role.
The film itself takes place in fictional Batavia City where a hungry director looking to cast his ambitious superhero film finds his potential lead actress in Srimaya, a struggling waitress and gifted martial artist. Desperate to appeal to reluctant producers, he convinces her to dress up in her alterego to fight real-life criminals in a series of viral videos that ultimately make her an internet sensation, while also drawing the attention of evil forces convinced that the city's newfound guardian angel has met he…

Review: KILL ORDER Fashions With Slick Martial Arts And Small Scale Sci-Fi

It's been about five years since I began following up on an original sci-fi action project from stuntman and coordinator James Mark. Together with Team 2X and Iron Bay Pictures and following an extensive period of production, Mark's debut feature, Kill Order, is finally on the way and while arguably a tough road to completion, manages to wade through the tedious some and present a noteworthy feature for its target audience.
Stuntman and martial artist, actor Chris Mark debuts as David Lee, a private school student haunted by spells of mania, mysterious flashbacks and a demonic affliction that torments him on a regular basis while in his uncle's care. It wakes up in timely fashion when a fully-armed tactical unit raids his psychology class room, ensuing a treacherous and rollicking fight to protect himself and girlfriend, May, from the small army of killers now hot on their tale. Triggered with unexplained supernatural abilities and with nowhere to run or hide, Lee's l…

Gareth Evans's GANGS OF LONDON Toplines Pulse's TV Slate For Cinemax And Sky

Fan favorite Gareth Huw Evans is on the way with a new serial crime drama, Gangs Of London for HBO's Cinemax and Sky Atlantic. Looking to bring a new "cinematic viewing experience" as Deadline quotes Evans, the show marks a small-screen first for Pulse Films whose Thomas Benski, Founder and Chief Executive, describes the show as the "ideal calling card" to launch Pulse's TV slate.

Readying a 2019 launch, the show is set in contemporary London, now ground zero for international gang warfare as the assassination of a crime boss initiates a power vacuum that uproots the fragile peace between other gangs and sends the underworld into chaos. The show stems from an original idea from Evans and noted cinematographer Matt Flannery best known for lensing the brutal martial arts action scenes in Evans' The Raid and The Raid 2.
Pulse is producing with Jane Featherstone's Sister Pictures co-producing.
Both Evans and Flannery are directing the series as well as…

Rising Action Star Jose Manuel Talks THE MAN FROM KATHMANDU

Much has happened this year for actor and martial artist Jose Manuel. Interviewing him back in April was something of a milestone achievement, and no less for a rising star who himself has contributed years of sharpening talent and unmitigated resolve toward growing into the headlining action star he strives to be to date since making history in 2012 with Puerto Rican martial arts action feature, El Testigo (The Witness).

His recent 'Best' wins for the Short Film Competition and Blood Sweat And Bones categories at the Urban Action Showcase and Expo on November 10 are also doing plusses for him this month. Retribution won the latter of the two and you can currently catch that one via YouTube. The other, Uncompromised, still stands plenty to gain with Manuel taking the lead next year following his current endeavors in Nepal.

For this, we bring you The Man From Kathmandu, hailing from Nakim Uddin - head of Nepal's largest theatrical exhibitor, QFX Cinemas, and marking anothe…

BULLET HEAD: Man's Best Friend Ain't Very Friendly In The Official Trailer

Paul Solet's new crime thriller is getting a theatrical release on December 8. I speak of Bullet Head following its acquisition by Saban back in September and a trailer has been online for several days now sampling a bit of the essential kinetic chills and thrills to be expected.

For this, we get Adrien Brody, John Malkovich and Rory Culkin starring in a story among other intertwining stories that focus on love, fear and conditioning, and the wrong turns that tend to have us land in the dog house. Save for further largess on the matter, the dog hunting our cast down is most certainly pissed.

Antonio Banderas also stars in this one - Can't say I know why but clearly his badass screen persona here lends something cool and wicked to viewers. Check out the trailer:

THE FOREIGNER Arrives Home On DVD, Blu-Ray And Digital This Winter

Martin Campbell's latest thriller, The Foreigner, is coming home to Blu-Ray, DVD and Digital between December and January. Fellow contributor James gave the film a balanced approach in his owm analysis calling it "an immaculately shot, deliberately paced political thriller with sudden bursts of hardcore action from Chan...", while some probably didn't like how less Chan-centric it was in their view. Apparently director Steve Soderburgh's latest horror thriller is being shot using an iPhone - I couldn't tell you much of anything since I'm an Android user but I guess the Logan Lucky helmer was up for a fitting challenge.
At any rate, New Regency announced on Wednesday that the company has acquired the international distribution rights to the Academy Award winning director’s upcoming psychological horror thriller, Unsane. The new move underscores New Regency's m.o. to collaborate with like-minded and visionary creative talent.

Joining in are Joshua Leonard, Jay Pharoah, Juno Temple, Aimee Mullins, and Amy Irving starring from a script by Jonathan Bernstein and James Greer. “We have always been great admirers of Steven’s work, and we’re deligh…
